What does the Chamber of Labour do, and why is it important?

Always on hand to stand up for employee rights

All employees can count on the Chamber of Labour (AK) to fight their corner, defend their rights and make sure they always have a say in political decisions. We all want legislation that takes employees’ interests into account. That’s why our specialists take a very close look at what the law says, providing expert opinions, drafting proposals for legislation and safeguarding key labour rights for our members. Because fair working conditions and a highly developed welfare state must not be taken for granted.

Just to give you a few examples: from the right to a minimum of five weeks’ annual holiday to parental and carer’s leave – the AK, in collaboration with the trade unions, fought for many of the rights that we now take as read.

Sachlich, in leichter Sprache

For many years, employees had no-one to stand up for their interests. So the trade unions founded the Chamber of Labour (AK), establishing a body to fight for the rights of the country’s workers. And to make their lives better. It’s also vital to have a counterbalance to industrial giants and conglomerates – it wouldn’t be right if employers always called the tune. This is why the AK takes proactive steps to ensure that employees’ interests are not overlooked. Particularly when it comes to legislation.

If you go to work, you have certain rights – but they aren’t always respected. And when this happens, it’s important that the AK is on hand to provide support. The AK also helps members who are taken for a ride by companies when they go shopping or book a holiday. And apprentices, too, so that they can defend their rights and aren’t just there to make the tea.

Witzig, mit anschaulichen Vergleichen, in DU

Forewarned is forearmed. The Chamber of Labour (AK) is there for you if you’re having legal problems at work or in everyday life. But there’s much more to our job than that – we’re also happy to do the legwork and give you information about your rights when your employer goes bust, or when it comes to doing your taxes. We can also give you tips on mobiles, holidays and insurance. Whatever you need, we’re here to make sure your rights are respected. When new laws are planned, we stand up for you and make sure you don’t get short-changed.
